He later served as a customs broker, customs inspector, and chairman of the Board of Examiners of the Civil Service Customs House in Cleveland, Ohio. The collection consists of Civil War letters written by Fenton while serving with the 6th Regiment, Ohio Cavalry; 2 scrapbooks of reunion records (ca. 1884) of the 6th Ohio Cavalry Veterans Association; and scrapbooks of letters and newspaper clippings relating to Fenton's career in customs administration, his relations with Charles F. The collection consists primarily of correspondence between Charles J. Ballard, Collector of Customs for the Port of Cleveland, and Salmon P. Chase, Secretary of the Treasury during the Civil War. In addition, the collection includes other correspondence and five oaths of office of customs house employees. He also served as a judge in the Geauga County Court of Common Pleas and as postmaster of Cleveland. His son, Ashbel W. Walworth, assumed many of his father's business responsibilities and official posts, including postmaster and collector of customs at Cleveland.
